Gradey Dick scouting report at March Madness mark of the season
Gradey’s offense
Nearly all of the top NBA offenses now rely on some movement shooting, and Gradey Dick excels in all shooting scenarios, including stationary, transition, and movement shooting. He is the only freshman in the Bart Torvik database to shoot 40% on 10+ threes per 100 possessions and 85% at the free throw line among players 6’8 or taller – astounding marks given his height and age; to say that he’s a skilled shooter would be an understatement. Gradey’s closeout creation is good, capable of pulling off sidestep threes, stepback threes, and one-dribble pull-ups, while still having room to improve as well.
The most under-appreciated skill of Gradey is his passing. He is excellent at finding shooters and has shown flashes of hitting the roller in a few PnR reps. Although he isn't expected to initiate offense at the next level, Gradey's passing is more than adequate for a movement shooter with his gravity.
But Grady must improve his finishing. Though he has good touch and is a good cutter, his slashing off the catch is below average due to his subpar technique and vertical pop. His counters against physical opponents are another area where I'd like to see him develop. It isn't a strength of Gradey's to create on-ball advantages in the half-court; he lacks the athleticism and handling required. Gradey's offensive role will be as a movement shooter.
Gradey’s defense
Gradey's off-ball defense is strong; he closes out on shooters and tags rollers while playing passing lanes, though physical wings can exploit him off the catch and frequently draw fouls off his closeouts. Gradey has demonstrated brief instances of sliding his feet against some guards in isolation, though the sample is small. Overall, I don't think Gradey's defense is a problem, but I wouldn't consider it a strength at the next level. I believe he will be a low activity defender due to his lack of strength and pliability (that is, functional flexibility and mobility), as well as not boasting any outstanding defensive instincts.
Current projection
I'd compare his median outcome to Kevin Huerter, with his floor being a low-end rotational wing and his ceiling a top 10 shooter of all time.
